in august, my sister and i headed to europe to visit our brother and his girlfriend, who live in amsterdam, and to experience as much contemporary art as possible. we spent our first 4 days in amsterdam, then nearly 6 days in berlin, and rounded out our trip with 4 days in copenhagen. what stands out to me in amsterdam is: visiting the anne frank house, experiencing our first techno club, thrift shopping, the stedelijk museum, staying in and making soup on a rainy day, the botanical gardens, and trying traditional dutch food at moeder’s, a small restaurant covered in photos of folks’ moms. grace and i both LOVED berlin and i am already ready to return. i especially loved experiencing the berlin biennale, the prinzessengarten urban community garden, the best lebanese food i’ve ever had at babel, the street art walking tour, taking the train all over, the holocaust memorial, the jewish museum, eating a LOT of pho (i caught a cold on the 4th day), seeing loredena neme’s work at the berlinische gallery, and tons of card games at our hostel. we finished our big trip at the cutest airbnb on earth in copenhagen, and got to enjoy REAL denmark after growing up in a danish settler town. we loved walking around nyhavn, frederiksburg gardens, taking a canal tour (even though i was still VERY SICK), eating street polenta at reffen, and taking the train out to experience louisiana museum, which was INCREDIBLE. as you can see, i went photo-heavy at the beginning of the trip, and reaaaally tapered off by the end.
